i hear the yell far over from the fields of slowly dying cotton
we see the blood, reach the shed
we are just in time to stop him
but in a month i'll find him swinging
cry over the tragic note he jotted down
and he will settle out amongst the barren lands
and slowly be forgotten

and every man and every dog
will come into the town to hear the will
father says for us to kneel
but i am not, i am sitting still

i never learnt to pray
and i never will
while there's still no rain

the sidewalk smells the sickly sweet scent
of jacarandas in the sun
but no one's on the playground because
no one in the town has any fun
the cyclone through the mainstreet has left discount stores
and drugmarts in its wake
and i hate the fact i live here
i hate the fact it feels like no mistake

and underneath the dirt i'm sure
that someone's bones are laughing at the dust
and that's all good for parliaments
but where does that leave the rest of us?
